Pageanthology’s Supreme Queen for 2022 is Venezuela’s Amanda Dudamel – a delegate whose runner-up finish sparked one of the loudest fan backlashes in recent Miss Universe history.
Crowned Miss Venezuela 2021 on October 28, 2021, in Caracas. Dudamel – daughter of former Venezuelan footballer Rafael Dudamel – carried both a fashion design background and a strong social project into her national reign, working with men and women in Petare’s agricultural sector through her initiative “Dale Play al Éxito.”
At Miss Universe 2022 in New Orleans, held under new ownership for the first time since Anne Jakrajutatip took over the organization, Dudamel emerged as the clear fan favorite throughout the competition. The result triggered a wave of public criticism and disappointment from fans who felt Dudamel had been the deserving winner.
Her finish as 1st Runner-Up marked Venezuela’s best Miss Universe placement since Gabriela Isler won the crown in 2013 – nearly a decade earlier. It also made her the fourth consecutive Latin American delegate to finish as 1st Runner-Up at Miss Universe, continuing a remarkable regional streak at the pageant’s top.
Facing the backlash directly upon her return home, Dudamel addressed her critics with grace: “I felt very good and I am very sure that this was the victory that Venezuela deserved,” she said, asking fans to respect the results.
