Pageanthology’s Supreme Queen for 2020 is Peru’s Janick Maceta – a competitor who spent years knocking on pageantry’s door before delivering Peru’s best Miss Universe result in over six decades.
This wasn’t Maceta’s first run at a national crown. She placed Top 10 at Miss Peru back in 2016, then returned in 2019 as runner-up. That same year, she represented Peru at Miss Supranational, finishing third runner-up in Poland. Persistence finally paid off on November 29, 2020, when she was crowned Miss Peru 2020, earning her spot at Miss Universe.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Miss Universe 2020 pageant was postponed and eventually held on May 16, 2021, in Florida. Maceta made it worth the wait – she placed as 2nd Runner-Up, marking Peru’s highest placement at Miss Universe since all the way back in 1957. It was a result over 60 years in the making for the country.
Beyond the crown, Maceta brought substance to her platform. An audio engineer and music producer by trade, she used her national title to spotlight child protection issues, working toward launching an NGO focused on legal support for children who are victims of sexual abuse – a cause she spoke about candidly during her Miss Universe run, calling attention to gaps in resources and reporting systems for victims.
For finally breaking through after years of near-misses, delivering Peru’s best Miss Universe result in six decades, and using her platform for a cause bigger than the crown.
