Before she ever wore the Puerto Rico sash, Madison Anderson’s story was already complicated. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in Orlando, Florida, to an American father and Puerto Rican mother, her win at Miss Universe Puerto Rico sparked a wave of debate across the island about identity and representation.
She addressed it directly, saying she represented a new generation of Puerto Ricans – one that doesn’t require living on the island or speaking Spanish to belong to it. She silenced the skeptics on the world stage. Representing Puerto Rico at Miss Universe 2019.
