Pageanthology’s Supreme Queen for 2018 is Vietnam’s H’Hen Niê — a title she earned by delivering the single most historic pageant moment of the year for her country.
Representing Vietnam at Miss Universe 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand, H’Hen Niê became the first Miss Universe participant from Vietnam to come from an ethnic minority group. Before she ever stepped on stage in Bangkok, she had already redefined what a Vietnamese beauty queen could look like — her dark skin and short hair stood in stark contrast to Vietnam’s traditional beauty ideals, sparking early debate that she pushed through with quiet confidence.
That confidence paid off on the biggest stage possible. H’Hen Niê bested 89 other contestants to place in the Top 5 of Miss Universe 2018 — a result that stands as Vietnam’s best-ever placement in the competition’s history. No Vietnamese representative had reached the Top 10 before her; the closest any contestant had come was the Top 15, back in 2008.
Her run wasn’t just about placement — it was about moments. She wore a national costume inspired by the Vietnamese sandwich bánh mì, selected through a nationwide vote after six designs were narrowed down.
Off the stage, her win became a story of generosity — H’Hen Niê donated her entire prize package, worth roughly 43,000 USD, to fund scholarships for students in her home village and to support her Room to Read social project.
